On my way to DC for the CNN Town Hall on Sunday at 7! Riding the private jet known as the Amtrak.

I don’t have any complaints. I remember riding the bus a lot when I was younger. Compared to that Amtrak feels great. 😀

I’m a big fan of trains and wish the US had more modern railways. Heard recently that airlines have lobbied against high-speed trains that would reduce business across particular routes. Trains would be better for the environment and on other levels.

In Asia I’ve ridden a train that goes the distance from NYC to DC in 100 minutes. Imagine what that would do for an economy. Whole new communities would be developed that would be newly commutable. Changes one’s ideas of time and distance.

China built 18,000 miles of high-speed rail in the last 15 years. America's failure to develop effective public transit within cities and high-speed rail between cities is an international embarrassment. We can do better! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-speed_rail_in_China …

I like trains. But China is far denser and yet not all those rail lines in China make economic sense. Read a rational book-length analysis of the history and future prospects of passenger rail in America. This is a pretty good book: https://smile.amazon.com/Romance-Rails-Passenger-Trains-Transportation-ebook/dp/B07JHDG29Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Q7QHW2DH5HMZ&keywords=romance+of+the+rails&qid=1555256070&s=gateway&sprefix=romance+of+rail%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-1 …

China also has about 300 million migrant workers who work in large cities. They travel by rail because their family can't live with them due to the Hukou (户口) system. Americans don't migrate seasonally, away from their families, leaving behind children, the way the Chinese do.

No way to build it in the only place it would make sense, Northeast corridor. Too old, too built up. Eminent domain litigation would take a century.

America isn't growing it's infrastructure like China. If the US development policies were backtracked to post WW2 then China would be the underdog. I wish there was high-speed rail everywhere but the need isn't there in America, just perceived.
