Voting was made anonymous to reduce corruption (vote buying) and incentivize sincere voting, good principles, less clear empirically how well it works, US election rules incentivize strategic voting for different reasons.
I don't know how the monumental importance of anonymity can be so easily trivialized. I'm honestly suspicious of people who throw these ideas around without addressing downsides.

This is an interesting argument. I had the intuition that this anonymity causes problems idea was maybe wrong-headed, this makes it concrete. Also, FB doesnt seem to do that well and it's mostly with ppl you know.
I guess I’m just sickened inside by anonymous Twitter accounts because it puts a lens on despicable human behaviors like bullying and mob mentality. Twitter and voting don’t carry the same weight.
So am I. But anonymity sometimes is a necessary evil to protect yourself. And often it is more important who says something then what is said. This bias is less with anonymous accounts.
I hold strongly to the value of anonymity to both discourse and voting, but not for a common reason. Conjoining the two in this manner is not legit, IMO.
