P.S. if anonymity on Twitter is bad, why should we have anonymity in the voting booth? Arguments for 'accountability' in voting behavior should make your blood run cold....

If I am not willing to own it, I probably should not say it.

I think there's a lot of valid reasons why some people want/need anonymous accounts, but, as none of those apply to me, I agree with Dave.

Anonymity isn't any problem at all, because the problem isn't ppl need to be accountable for their statements. The problem is we need to control how we respond to statements, and ideas.

I agree. Though I don't know an algorithm for tweaking that factor in anyone but myself. I can encourage it in my interlocutors. But that's about it.

Which problems are supposed to be fixed by removing anonymity. I doubt it would do much to temper outrage culture. That's facilitated just fine by human nature+the sharing dynamics. And I'm "essentially" anonymous to most of my followers anyway. But it might have other benefits.

I had an anonymous blog for awhile. It allowed me to express publicly thoughts about the industry I was in that were not welcome by my customers. You can bite your lip only so many times before you feel the urge to vent.

Absolutely. Especially going from 220lbs to 120 while in politics, I am acutely aware of how many of my views have been pereceived & reacted to in a wildly polar opposite way, depending on my weight at the time. Going anon would take accusations of projecting out of the equation.

Anonymity may reduce accountability, but also nepotism. http://gap.hks.harvard.edu/orchestrating-impartiality-impact-%E2%80%9Cblind%E2%80%9D-auditions-female-musicians …

I hardly use my non-anonymous Twitter & Facebook accounts. I mostly just use them to keep in touch with family and friends. I don't want to offend people I know with my opinions, nor do I want to be ostracized for them. And I don't exactly want angry Twitter mobs coming after me.
