This is one of many issues where (1) I have no idea what's best, (2) a randomized controlled trial would help clarify the pros and cons of anonymity, but (3) an RCT (anon vs. non-anon versions of Twitter) would be impossible to run.

Maybe the issue is applying fixed positions to fluxing values. What if promoting self identification, in any form, was best? I can filter out nonsense or identify when another is reactive; all without blaming the individual for a particularly emotive stance.
