If I had to guess, I think anonymity imposed greater costs than benefits on the commons.

Maybe the issue is applying fixed positions to fluxing values. What if promoting self identification, in any form, was best? I can filter out nonsense or identify when another is reactive; all without blaming the individual for a particularly emotive stance.
