Surely we wouldn't characterize human monogamy and paired childraising as 'reliable'. Does sexual selection end up equally powerful across sexes anyways for some reason?

The whole "being visually appealing" in non-human species is usually a sexually selected males thing. Clearly human women deal with this too. Though insofar as women have greater parental investment than men, you would expect them to be subject to less selection than men.
