Genetics question: So, some traits are monogenic, some are super polygenic, many are in between. Is there a theory of why some traits ended up more or less polygenic than others?

I’d think there are some traits for which smooth variance is beneficial at the population level. Eg the oft mentioned variation of males (altho I think this explanation for greater male variance is overstated)

What's your definition of a 'complex' trait? Height, for example, seems like a 'simple' trait, and is yet polygenic.
