Why do men do this kind of crazy shit? Because somewhere in that audience there's a woman watching, and maybe just maybe if he makes the basket she'll be impressed, and he'll gain status among his fellow males. This was millions of years ago. Ancient programs still running. https://twitter.com/YouHadOneJ0B/status/1113471120710131712 …

Two complementary adaptations: 1) conspicuous male risk-taking as mating effort 2) men conspicuously denying that risk-taking has anything to do with mating effort

Not only a mating effort. But a signal to male peers that they make a good ally.

Men conspicuously denying that risk-taking has anything to do with mating effort is a form of mating effort.

Don’t some of these men just look for an adrenaline rush? Or is that linked with mating?

Why would you look for an adrenaline rush if it wasn't beneficial for surviving, at least at some point in the past? Risk taking -> adrenaline rush as a response of body to cope with risk -> social status -> more mating options. Whether you are conscious about it doesn't matter.

You’ve got the process backwards. Women don’t give a shit about dunks. What happens is the other men recognize that guy is the best and the women pick up on that and want the guy that’s the best

Predictably, already seeing people in the comments very confused about proximate vs ultimate causes.

          3) Women, and men working together to deny that a large percentage of the populace finds self destructive risk attractive... And culture, should really be working to solve that problem.
