It is not just a common thing, it is the ur-politics. There is no politics without identity. And like politics itself, I can’t judge its existence as “good” or “bad.”

I think you’re using a different definition if IP than most. The issue with modern IP is the mix of putting identity above all else and the authoritarian and aggressive way it polices. Previous “IP” didn’t do this, at least not on this scale.
