As a person who is just now entering the scientific community, and one who was raised by my mother, a scientist, up until now I held a belief (apparently, erroneous), that the participants of scientific conferences were evaluated by their merit, not gender. Welcome to UpsideDown.

That would be ideal, but that’s not really how the world works. Even if success wasn’t based on gender or race in the slightest, we all know getting ahead has a lot to do with who you know, not necessarily what you know. Anyone who truly believes otherwise is just being naive
