"Focus on a big, hard, tractable, neglected problem" Is your field some kind of garden of low-hanging fruit or something? The expectation that PhD students can find low-hanging fruit of this sort is what drives rude awakenings during lit reviews.

What about those of us that are skeptical of the mass amounts of research that is either a) a false positive or b) the publish or perish lifestyle and wanting to produce REAL, replicable, quality studies? Not just crank out 4 b.s. publications a year.

I want to make quality additions to the lit. Not just publish crap to get tenure because thats what my department wants me to do.

Have some experienced and reliable third party confidentially evaluate your project plan at the early (draft) stages. He/she can provide input about the feasibility and the odds of success of the project. This is especially useful in basic research projects.
