Character growth and story arc and stepping up gradually over the course of the series to make some of the most important decisions to save the human race.

I will suggest that Jamie in Game of Thrones has an even more dramatic character growth with similar import and is ultimately the hero of the epic, though I don't know for sure as we don't know the end.
