What do you think about the idea of Americans being more Puritan at heart?
We have very weird attitudes to sex, both more puritanical and more hypocritical than other Western countries. For example, American conservatives often have kinkier sexual fantasies than liberals, according to the new @JustinLehmiller book.

This is very unlikely to be true.

I dunno. The finding may be partly just males confounding results. But there is very little study of (or even conceptualization of) "sexual openness", and at least in, e.g., sex-negative variants of feminism, there is often profound repression and unease with sexual exploration.

I am not sure a country's attitude to sex has that much to do with the situation of academic sex research there. I mean, France and Italy aren't world leaders in that field, far from it.
