Designing the acoustics matters. But of course the main reason restaurants are so loud, is blaring brick-wall-limited pop music which overlaps our vocal frequencies so we can't hear each other...which nobody actually requested. Seems like every owner just assumes.

The reason for this is that popular restaurants don’t want older customers. Young affluent customers tend to spend more because they are trying to impress their dates for sexual reasons. Old people spend less and are a sexual turnoff for younger people. Older people generally 1/2

have more trouble filtering loud sounds than young people do.

Article is written by “architecture and design critic”. Ask a restaurateur and you’ll find lighting and music are used purely for ambiance to attract respest business - not some malicious manipulation. Bright lights and low music attract empty tables and the elderly.

As a tinnitus sufferer, I agree that it’s unbearable. A particularly loud restaurant will edge up the ringing in my ears for weeks.

I think it’s mostly the large chain restaurants that are loud. Small restaurants do rustic industrial just fine. I don’t like it when they turn the lights down too much either. I would like to see what I’m eating and drinking.
