Cornell economist Robert H. Frank has excellent work on how gov't policies can help workers escape from runaway workaholism, and restore work/life/family balance. Paid family leave is a good example of how that can work. Look him up!
PS Prof. Frank argues there's a coordination failure: individual workers try to out-compete each other by working longer hours with less vacation, but if they could all agree to more holiday & leave, they'd all be happier & make more babies. That's the gov'ts possible role here.
