True, but both the scientific method and slavery might make a civilization more competitive, and it's often more about a group over another group within a civilization, like sexual mutilation or the power of the clergy. I think case by case is a better way to judge.

Slavery does not make a civilization more competitive. The South lost for a reason: lower incentive to industrialize and optimise.
