So, @ConceptualJames has now gone away for his annual manly fortnight of manliness in China where he & a load of other men injure themselves & each other in the name of martial art. We are warned very sternly that we are not allowed to interrupt this except for dire emergencies.

This is mostly a historical accident the throws in shuai jiao are mostly the same as those of judo. Similar joint locks are found chin na as in Jujutsu and the basic forms of punching, kicking elbows and knee strikes are all found in Chinese martial arts.

Japanese martial arts were spread worldwide in part due to then US occupation and Chinese arts were damaged badly by the communist revolution. The two traditions were at one time deeply interwoven.

Also Brazilian jiu-jitsu comes from Judo which comes from Japanese jiu-jitsu.
