Japanese jujitsu developed many moves now used in MMA. Very few Chinese martial arts contributed to MMA tactics, IIRC. MMA is a great lab for testing what really works.
This is mostly a historical accident the throws in shuai jiao are mostly the same as those of judo. Similar joint locks are found chin na as in Jujutsu and the basic forms of punching, kicking elbows and knee strikes are all found in Chinese martial arts.
Japanese martial arts were spread worldwide in part due to then US occupation and Chinese arts were damaged badly by the communist revolution. The two traditions were at one time deeply interwoven.
Also Brazilian jiu-jitsu comes from Judo which comes from Japanese jiu-jitsu.
