By this measure, we should all eat pork instead of chicken. The loss of one chicken life gives my family 3 meals. The loss of one pig life gives my family a few meals a week for a year.
That's correct. Cows are better than pigs though because most cows live better lives than factory-farmed pigs.

But if the vegan argument matters, which vegans appear to believe it does, then individual choices matter. So the fact that some people (myself included) raise our own animals for meat should matter too. But for most vegans the individual choice argument stops with their choices

A better argument to minimize animal suffering in the meat industry would be more support for small farms, with a rating system for humane conditions. Small farms get no support in the US, and farming is expensive. Most meat eaters are not going to stop.
