1 depends 100% on what "useful" means to you, and I would say your implied definition here is deficient. Also, notice you said just "fiction" as opposed to "good fiction." In any case, it's apples to oranges.

Dostoyevski, Bulgakov, Hemingway, Steinbeck and the English classics aren't that bad though. For me, creative writing turned out to be a great by-product from reading fiction. Plus it laid some groundwork to more efficiently read non-fiction later on. Not reading at all=
