It's truly bizarre for serious Christian scholars at Cambridge, who presumably spend their days contemplating God's infinite power & grace, Christ's redemption of Man, and the eternal afterlife, to be so swayed by a pack of petty, short-sighted, virtue-signaling undergrads.

"Presumably" is the point of failure in your otherwise valid analysis. Truth of it is that much of SJW political philosophy came from or is echoed by the various "liberation theologies" and other goofiness present in the church, let alone in the divinity schools.
