OpEds on college admissions scandal are looking for "root causes" of why it happened. It's super simple: people will cheat if (1) they think they will gain from it (2) they think they will get away with it. It's like looking for root causes for sports cheating. Duh. To win. QED.
Runaway credentialism (signaling) creates the incentives for gaming admissions to big name schools. If higher education was really about learning, parents would care much less about where their kids went.

If I only cared about my kids’ learning, given that my husband &I are streaming them into the field of statistical analysis and computer science, edX and Coursera would have sufficed. College is also abt building your future social network,life-long friendships & finding spouses
