If reasonable people disagree about a policy idea, why can't we try a randomized controlled trial of the policy in some states and not others? Then, like, actually measure whether it works? #experimentation #learningstuff #ABtesting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Policy_experimentation …pic.twitter.com/oLnuirHz3l

Sort of. Except random assignment is crucial for inferring causation.

I think that is the point of general elections, pick a candidate and see wtf happens. If poor people realize yang wants to write them checks every month I don’t see how he won’t win. Then the experiment will begin.

But we can't actually learn anything without random assignment and clear metrics of success...

That was the original bloody idea. I have no idea why Oregon can’t be communist, Texas can be Libertaria with a twang, etc. I’d love to see completely new models used, too. We don’t know everything yet. Probably never will. Experimentation and testing are essential.

Stop using logic. There is no place left for it in the village square. We have been conditioned to use only base tribal emotions, with external sources ramping the intensity to 11. (much to our detriment)

It's a good idea in theory, but I suspect that, in the vast majority of cases, the fact that states have very different internal political situations will prevent them from being able to coordinate in the systematic way that running an inter-state RCT would require.

Also, the antecedent assumes that we can be rational about such things when we are clearly incapable of doing so.

Isn't this the point of a federation of states? Something like this already happens. O 1 or 2 states legalize weed. Then when nothing too terrible happens a few more do ect.
