Yet another example that epigenetics has been vastly overhyped.https://twitter.com/NicoleBarbaro/status/1106500009435058176 …

DNA methylation affecting coat color in mice, previously hypothesized to be a result of epigenetic inheritance, turns out to be a result of classic genetic inheritance instead. The methylation of the gene affecting coat color is coded in the genome. https://www.the-scientist.com/notebook/classic-mechanism-of-epigenetic-inheritance-is-rare--not-the-rule-65511 …

Please, few ppl were suggesting the germ-line epigenetic marks were transmitted, but there is a consensus among behavioral epigeneticists about the critical role that early experiences play in gene methylation and histone acetylation. So marks are recreated reliably across gen.

We should wait until this is reproduced bc claims of heritability of methylations sites are sometimes very off .https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-07276-w …

The field of epigenetics is way too young to already call it overhyped. It's so hard to find causal connections, give it at least another 10+ years. I'm currently working on hibernation, classic genetics doesn't give answers there.

I don’t understand how one of the major mechanisms by which we build a body of ~40 trillion cells of ~260 different types from a single cell can be overhyped.

Epigenetics is a huge term that englobes different mechanisms such as... Histone tail methilation, acetylation, CpG islands, micro RNA regulation, genetic imprinting and many more. The term can be used in very vague ways to mean "environment dependent" but its much more than that

The fact that a methylation pattern is coded into the genome means there are converging pathways impacting methylation pattern, some of which are likely governed by the environment, imo.

I haven't followed any literature or articles regarding epigenetics in a long time. Any particular results you'd like to share to support your position?
