I don’t have a coherent position on gun control. That’s a bit odd. I can’t weigh the abstraction of self-defense against a future tyrannical state vs the immediacy of school shootings. I have different feelings about rural and urban environments. I fear guns, but enjoy them. Etc.

It's OK not to have a position on a thing.

Gun-control is an issue so removed from the EEA that when it activates primal emotions it makes discussion about its pros/cons volatile.

I know several liberals who favor strict gun control, yet own and enjoy firearms. There is nuance to this conversation. But, of course, that is not allowed in today's environment.

Too many people don’t realize this and jump to a position without having researched it, and then convince themselves that they believe that position without realizing they never did due diligence.

The thing is, if you do enough homework, MANY positions are reconcilable. (The fact that people only know the evidence that supports, and not the evidence that refutes, their worldview, is the problem.) Gun control seems to be one of the outliers in that space.

this originates when young people are told to "be opinionated" in some kind of get-out-the-vote way. the new wisdom should be "only have an opinion if it's rigorous; don't be opinionated for the sake of it, it's probably a dumb opinion."
