It's false because the hypothesis fails when tested empirically. In addition to the piece by

Women do choose along the lines of status. https://psyarxiv.com/mtsx8 (Also holds for orthodox Jews and status through religiosity, entertainingly.) Monogamy (also see serial monogamy) still sees high status guys favored. Particularly when it comes to casual sex.

Sure, but preferences don't map onto actual sexual pairings in a straightforward way. For e.g. a woman's preference for high status might be balanced by a stronger desire to have sex with a likeable, reliable partner in the interests of creating LTR.
