It means the major geopolitical force on the planet we live on -- and consequently the force of the culture and ethos of the population there -- will arguably be China. Were you actually confused?

The Three-Body Problem is one of worst (sci)fi books I've ever read. And I certainly hope future is not bad fiction and people jumping in pots of boiling soup (actual detail from this anti-masterpiece). Peter Watts's Blindsight is future more than China.

Russian sci-fi is bleak and hopeless. I expect Chinese sci-fi to be quite the opposite.

Interesting read! What stuck out to me was this line: "If humanity does pick up a signal from an alien civilisation, we will probably reply in Mandarin." Scary!

If we're very lucky, the future is a somewhat liberalised China, or one that has re-fragmented into a number of allied statelets (it has consolidated and fragmented throughout its history so far). Ideally both. That it is the next Rome is basically certain.

I was in China in 2002 and it was nationalist then too - worked with chinese girl in London 2001 she was too. Chinese have very strong sense of national identity & proud of it - but is communist superiority indoctrinated not historical based sadly..interesting it is being ramped
