"women created patriarchy" is evolutionary psychology's extreme over-emphasis on mate choice taken to its Galaxy Brain conclusion. It is a fiction that can be maintained only by people who do not read ethnography and have no interest in doing so. See my pinned thread if skepticalhttps://twitter.com/feminiscience/status/1104421466584563713 …

      Will added,

David Buss suggests that women created patriarchy. "They are not passive pawns of the masculine game". Being the sex that invests more in reproduction, women are more selective, prefer men with status and this reproduces competition and hierarchy. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/231847217_The_evolutionary_psychology_of_patriarchy_Women_are_not_passive_pawns_in_men's_game …

I don't want to get into a twitter war, but the above entirely mischaracterizes my argument: Women's mate preferences and men's co-evolved strategies of mate competition COMBINED help to explain at least some elements of what is called 'patriarchy.

Ok fair, though do you think the pattern of arranged marriages and restricted female choice found by Apostolou (2007) https://www.researchgate.net/publication/237929517_Sexual_Selection_Under_Parental_Choice_The_Role_of_Parents_in_the_Evolution_of_Human_Mating … and also discussed here: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0019066 … conflict meaningfully with your assessment?pic.twitter.com/GQsC9okUPU

Admittedly, it would be nice if somebody other than just Apostolou did serious & sustained work on the influence of parental v. individual mate choice in human small-scale societies and prehistory.

I am working on something related to this in hunter-gatherer societies (which is also part of why I'm very confident in my assessment, because I've spent the last month or so pouring over ethnographies all day).
