The phrase 'X needs no introduction' should never, ever be uttered when introducing any speaker X at any meeting. There are almost always people attending who wish to know more about who X is, what they've done, and why they're there.

If it is a truly academic meeting, the ideas should be put on display, not the prestige of the speaker. Many times the introduction drags out, and it takes away from the speaker.

It’s also context dependent. If you’re at an event hosted by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the speaker is Freeman Dyson, you probably know more about him than you do about Oprah or the Rock.
