Speakers who would literally need no introduction in most American contexts:
1) POTUS
2) Dwayne @TheRock Johnson
3) Oprah Winfrey
If the speaker isn't on this list, they need an introduction

If I go to a standup act of Louis CK's...he's headlining. Why would anyone be attending that are unaware of who they went to see?
-
If he doesn't need an introducer at all, then he doesn't need an introducer saying 'my job is superfluous'.

Nah. Let X introduce himself. Introductions are like exposition in film. It can be of utility but the job can usually be done better by the meat of the film.
-
The role of introducer is to explain the awesome accomplishments of the speaker that a humble, shy, or introverted speaker would not wish to brag about themselves.

I find people who say this continue with the introduction anyway.

I would love to see the introducer say that and then just walk away.

Much more importantly, if you say someone needs no introduction, do not subsequently go on to introduce them.

Only if the person who says, “X needs no introduction” then immediately sits down.
-
I was here to say that, too.
