This is why we need the XO for free speech. Without it, administrators will keep standing by gutlessly as a tiny number of extremists use the heckler's veto to censor people. If admins lost federal funding for being gutless, they would stop being gutless. #incentiveshttps://twitter.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1103215939892310016 …

One anarchist antifa disruptor with a bell was able to shut down the Michael Strickland @Portland_State College Republicans speech as soon as the event began. Campus police & admin were there but just stood & watched. They said they couldn't do anything about the disrupter. pic.twitter.com/fSpuEjm8aQ

Do you think the xo will produce bravery out of nowhere?

The XO would eliminate the need for bravery among admins. They could just say, 'sorry, we have to protect free speech, or this university goes bankrupt in six months.' Incentives can be a good substitute for ethics (like in criminal law).

Also allows admin to deflect responsibility to an external source ("we are just following the law"), so protestors more likely to direct their outrage toward that source instead of admin, possibly improving relations b/t these two parties and positively affecting campus climate.

Very good point. Admins would _love_ to be able to pass the buck on the free speech thing.

More than just research funding, no US govt back loans should be eligible to be spent at colleges that violate student rights, and allow this nonsense.

Complete crap. They didn’t want to do anything. They could’ve removed the guy.

They didn't want to stop the heckler AND they had no incentive to stop the heckler. The XO would give that incentive.
