It’s not about policy, it’s about optics. If Democrats take the bait and become defensive about (the lack of) free speech on campus Trump wins votes. Lots of votes.https://twitter.com/hdxacademy/status/1103052061258776576?s=21 …

I also think people are forgetting what legal 1A protections are for. They're not, in any immediate sense, about changing hearts or improving the cultural climate. They're about stopping the government from violating people's rights. (1)

The 1A rights of professors at public universities are already protected by courts and professors can have FIRE take a 1A case to court. Trump's statement is one of many arbitrary symbolic appeals.

I'm confused here... is your objective to save universities or to save free speech? Getting mixed signals...
-
I'd rather save free speech than save universities that don't support free speech.

Or even more sinister... political impact? I'm sensing quite of bit of contradiction all over this topic. We need an injection of consistency in argument and objectivity in approach. Not seeing enough of this, IMO.

My view is simple. Public universities are arms of the state, bound by the First Amendment. If they don't respect
#1A, they shouldn't get any money from the state. Not a red cent. - 1 more reply

Agreed, and if Federal funding is withheld it will fundamentally change the educational landscape.

Or privatization, though I suppose that's a kind of existensial threat in and of itself.

Hit the cash flow, that’s all they care about. I still think about the UNH librarian that left $4M to the school and they decided that the most appropriate way for them to honor his gift was buying the football team a new digital scoreboard. 1A or no pay.
-
Wrong! They bought the university sports program the video monitor. Soccer,Lax, & university commencement also make use of the scoreboard.only about a 1/4 of the money was used on the scoreboard.
