History is instructive. But we are living in unprecedented times. We may have to do some new thinking about the problems of the 21st century.

How do you suggest such long term political thinking be achieved without an equivalent one party state or imperial system?
That's the 'win or lose the 21st century' question. I have no idea. We could start with more questions in presidential debates like 'What exactly do you want America to look like in 50 years, and how exactly do you propose to get there?'

German companies do a lot more long-term planning and execution because their stock market rewards it and doesn't egregiously overvalue quarterly results. I'd give an example wrt political long-termism iin a democracy, but you wouldn't believe me.
