It is a creed. They are signalling to themselves in attempt to convince themselves of something they don't wholly believe. No-one has to chant THE WORLD IS ROUND 30 times a day.
Purpose is to display moral superiority. 'To whom' is their tribe.
Donors. I don't have data , but they do. They know how many donors stopped donating, how many started donating recently, they will monitor interactions with their tweets etc etc. They will try several communication techniques and stick to what works
I supported the ACLU for 15 years. 2016 changed it. It's become partisan because its members are now all playing for one side.
It seems more like an appeal at defiance + credibility. That is, if I shout it out, it makes me look confident. If I'm projecting confidence, I'm therefore correct in my message. 'Loudness' figuratively speaking obfuscates the nuance of critique that comes with 'softness'.
