I just think of all the things I couldn't say on Twitter while identifying myself as a university professor. The mind reels with the thought of my newfound freedom here & in the classroom.https://twitter.com/GerrishLisa/status/1101917365636354048 …

Breaking! Trump announces live at #CPAC19 that he will sign an executive order to require "universities to require freedom of speech." His cheering followers love the idea of the Alt-right speaking on "liberal" campuses. Wait until they have to hear LBGTQ speeches at Liberty U!🏳️‍🌈

I am. I’ve never felt limits on my speech, & was trying to acknowledge—apparently unsuccessfully—Trump’s remark as red meat for his supporters.

Well, I feel limits on my speech in every lecture and every faculty meeting. Your mileage may vary depending on your ideology.

You should surely not be inserting ideology into a lecture anyway? If I am reading this correctly. What sorts of things are you limited from saying?

Anything that contradicts the prevailing ideology. He isn’t the one bringing it into the classroom. It was already there.

I’m not certain I know what the prevailing ideology is in my department, aside from generic academic center-left. Certainly there’s no slavish devotion to the blank slate or anything like that.

Curious whether your department includes any behavior genetics researchers, evolutionarily guided thinkers, religious traditionalists, or pro-#2A libertarians?

Out of a faculty of ~17: at minimum 2 churchgoing Christians (an observant Jew just retired), several people who do genetic-social research. Can't speak for #2A, but I own guns. So not exactly on point, but close.

But back to my question: you're a tenured faculty member. What happens if you speak to these beliefs, all admittedly less common in academe?

I haven't let that stop me. Here I am taking my university to the woodshed in the local paper for its Title IX case against me. Blowback? None. They've learned when it's in their interest to shut the fuck up.https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865691002/Op-ed-Frivolous-Title-IX-investigations-are-an-insult-to-real-sexual-assault-victims.html …
