Many faculty think you can either support demographic EDI, or free speech & ideological diversity, but not both. Any faculty candidate who was 'out' as a free speech advocate would be met with deep distrust ('they must be racist/sexist') by most hiring committees.
Regulations are needed to break these institutions of their pathologies. It’s not their place, if they should receive taxpayer funding, to act as gatekeepers for their own prejudices. Refusal to bend proves a necessity to break.
These institutions have effectively lost their capacity for responsible self-governance and internal ethical self-correction. There is no reason to afford them leniency any longer.
