The weird thing is, universities are now dominated by admins who grew up in the era of the 60s Free Speech Movement.... and then decided that universities should eliminate free speech whenever convenient to do so.
Don’t assume most Boomers are quick to restrict speech. We may be mostly silent, but we know what right.
Well we Gen X free speech advocates could use a little more support from the boomers right about now.
The most radical people of that era never left academia and became the very "establishment" they claimed to have fought.
The administrators who are doing this are not the ones calling the shots. They are, understandably, very risk averse and therefore highly susceptible to pressure.
Dominated? Not so sure. Anyway, there'll be less and less as we head towards the 2020s. Those of my teachers from the 60s/FSM era were generally pretty liberal, but even they scoffed at the rampant political correctness burgeoning in the 90s & 00s. Most of them are retired now...
...(or dead). Seems like those calling the shots now are from the following generation, inculcated in the French poststrucuralism and postcolonislism of the 70s and 80s. By the 90s, many had acquired tenure, and now they are running the departments.
