I don't think a presidential executive order is the right way to handle the campus free speech problem. (I also oppose presidential EOs in general.)https://reason.com/blog/2019/03/03/trump-executive-order-campus-free-speech …

Respectfully disagree. I've fought for free speech in higher ed for years, and IMHO administrators simply won't support #1A unless their funding is threatened. This is one culture war that can't be won at just the cultural level.

Do you suppose it would be effective in the long-term? Any chance it would end up being counter-productive long term?

I think an XO from POTUS would be by far the most effective long-term solution that's politically realistic.

Technically, public funding of universities always required compliance with #1A. In practice though, universities had little incentive to support free speech.

Sure, that could happen. The optics would be pretty bad though...

If we learned anything from Obama->Trump it's that anything done with a single pen can be undone with a single pen. EOs are always a stopgap measure at best. If this is a truly serious problem (it is), then it deserves the full weight of proper legislation.

If this is a truly serious problem (it is a real national emergency, IMHO), then it deserves to be solved asap by any credible means necessary. Congress will _never_ make public unis respect free speech. It's just not politically useful to their bases. Courts have also failed.

I don’t know if Robby is aware that ppl have been fighting against policies frequently used on campuses ( written by fervent anti free speech/due process authoritarians) that are designed to abuse students speech rights, and much more, for 3 decades. When policies that have been
