I find it very hard to take seriously that free speech is in any meaningful way under threat on campus. These read like exceptions to the general order of things that, because some folks stare at only these become the rule in their minds. They're not.
When's the last time you tried to express conservative, centrist, or libertarian ideas in an American university classroom, lab group, or faculty meeting? Just curious if you know what you're talking about.

Well I was a pretty hard pressed libertarian until a few years ago, and expressed my views regularly to fellow grad students, had a Johnson 2012 sticker on my laptop for a couple years, and expressed my views in sociology and philosophy classes regularly as an undergrad.
I'm no longer in academia (I went to industry after finishing my PhD) but I never saw any evidence of discrimination against libertarians or conservatives. Some friendly arguments sure, but nothing outside the bounds of standard behavior.
Why should universities have libraries then? Why preserve past scholarship at all? Why should the old teach the young, rather than vice versa?
Agreed. Chronicle of higher ed reports that the ratio of leftists to conservative is 28:1 on campuses in New England. How does that happen? Through hiring and over many decades- deliberately excluding people based on political persuasion. That’s alarming.
Wldnt whatever he says be anecdotal anyway? I think he’s making the argument there’s a lack of evidence to suggest a crisis of free speech on campus. I’ll give you an anecdote anyway, the midwest uni I go to always has a conservatives in its polisci classes. Climate deniers n all
Yeah, it's obviously anecdotal. But my experiences both at Georgia Tech and USC align with yours. And while.i haven't engaged much at USC, the Econ department at GT was heavily libertarian and conservative, & I remember my CompSci prof ranting against Obama & dems freshman year.
Never met a libertarian who could shut up long enough to be silenced on campus.
