Currency as a technology was shared widely, and gave the poor enormously greater opportunities to trade with each other, and to improve their lives. And most 'esoteric knowledge' was delusional nonsense that wouldn't have been worth sharing.

and when it wasn't it rapidly become science and the results were widely shared. Archimedes helped winning syracuse battle with his "esoteric knowledge", saving a lot of commoners lifes in the process.
