The federal government just announced its first AI initiative. This is overdue but welcome. The real step is putting resources behind it - including billions of dollars for computing resources. The Chinese and others are funding AI development. We should do the same.
AI is the biggest existential risk that humanity has ever faced. AI safety is the most important policy area for government to get right.

What are the objective standards for “getting AI regulation right”? What kind of trade-offs between efficient development and assurances of safety can be agreed upon, a priori, as worth it? AI could be the human extinction event, but it could also be an infinite QOL increase.

The main objective standard for getting AI regulation right is not going extinct. Beyond that, it's very very hard to anticipate.... I'm betting that it's best to avoid an AI military arms race against China thought.

Yes. An AI humans create is as much a moral as a technical challenge. Before we unleash independent digital actors on the world, we need absolute confidence in the morality and immutability of their base programming. I hope we are up to it.

Thats quite a statement. Many are concerned that AI poses an existential threat but their concerns are based on what they perceive future AI to be, not on what exists today Currently there is no threat and If we’re modelling it after human intelligence I wouldn’t worry too much
