As many, and varied, problems as I have with our public education system, I have even less faith in the average person's desire or ability to educate their own kids. Plus, it would take an all but impossible cultural shift for most people to even have time to attempt it.

Government does have a legitimate role of ensuring that everyone who wants an education gets a fair one (Brown v BoEd, Bakke v Regents of UoC), especially where institutions have demonstrated a pattern of discrimination. I lean toward thinking that government should fund education, but not run education. Allow different types of schools to emerge and let unsuccessful models fail due to low attendance and successful schools thrive from high attendance.
