There have been a few papers on these body modifications as costly signals of immunocompetence. But they don't explain the sudden change in cultural interest in tattoos.

Tattooing for example used to be illegal in NYC from 1961 to 1997. Also it had a social stigma for decades around the world. Also womens rights getting better, pop culture and the internet naturally helped the growth of tattooing to become more mainstream.http://time.com/4645964/tattoo-history/ …

Also one important factor is that tattooing used to be more secretive as a craft. The idea of tattoo apprenticeships was similar to a journeyman. They made the apprentices learn how to make your own needles, ink, tune the machines and draw like hell. Then after year or two tattoo
