There have been a few papers on these body modifications as costly signals of immunocompetence. But they don't explain the sudden change in cultural interest in tattoos.

The art and craft is incredible, really amazing skill and talent required, no doubt about that. It's easy to understand the appeal from the standpoint of the artist. It's harder to understand the appeal of being the canvas.

I'd get an aethetically pleasing geometric celtic sleave tattoo on both arms if: A) it cost $10 bucks. B) took less than two minutes to apply it. C) perfectly came off whenever I was bored of it.

It's the idea of permanently inking oneself that I don't get. People get bored of their shirts, but aren't going to tire of that skull on your shoulder? Let alone girlfriend tattoos...
