The federal government has proved incapable of keeping illegal drugs out of federal prisons. The notion that they can be kept out of the country by boning up on border security is a fantasy.https://twitter.com/hughhewitt/status/1096863385847644160 …

The counterpoint is that illegality is a deterrent to some potential drug users. That's the strongest argument - however consequentialist - I can think of against legalization. It's not very good, is it..
-
The arguments for alcohol Prohibition in the 20s were almost all consequentialist -- but misguided, in retrospect.

Addiction is a tricky thing. It can be weaponized against a person or group for personal gain. It’s the abuse of others that’s really behind drug laws…but those laws are rather broadly applied…often including substances that usually don’t destroy people’s lives and bodies.
-
Unjust enrichment by using addiction to manipulate others is immoral…not too different from slavery. The science questions like: “is drug x addicting?” That should be the litmus test, not: “is it mind altering?”

Switzerland legalized heroin for clinical treatment; combine that with psychological therapy (therapists and treatment options at heroin-use sites) and the govt achieved it's goals of lowering drug usage.

Serious question, you say legalize but wouldnt decriminalizing (keeping the laws on the books) do the same while implying not to do drugs to the general population? Then it could still be used as additions to crimes like murder/manslaughter, assault/battery.
