That's essentially fee-for-service which is how it's been done for years. The problem is the entire American healthcare system is broken. Single payer is actually a great idea, to simplify it, but the problem then becomes what the prices are set at. It has to be done fairly.
Politicians should make the case more strongly that single payer could massively reduce health care billing costs, which IIRC equal about as much as our entire military spending each year.

Agreed. That's probably single payor's biggest strength. We have so much admin. overhead and wasted time. As long as the prices set for services are agreeable and fair, I certainly don't mind. So why do you think it is that every other advanced industrialised country pays (often much) less, and has some kind of state-provided, or at least underwritten, solution that's basically not domestically controversial? Why does the US feel need to reinvent that wheel?
