Geoffrey Miller Retweeted APA Division 51

Ignoring blowback, @APA still aims to re-engineer the sexual identities & psychologies of half the population, based on a far-Left Blank Slate political ideology that loathes traditional masculinity & everything associated with it. Make no mistake: this is the next Culture War.https://twitter.com/SPSMM_D51/status/1092807720586100737 …

What's been criticised is a particular version of masculinity, based on sexism, homophobia, & narrow emotional restriction."https://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2019-02-05/mens-mental-health-masculinity-gendered-psychology-guidelines/10768294 …

That they're digging in their heals as opposed to engaging with their critics in good faith suggests that these people are activists first and scientists/clinicians second (if at all). Even if their guidelines were flawless, this is not how a professional organization should act.

I disagree. @APA & @SPSMM_D51 have had people go on TV, from @FoxNews to @GMA. They've done interviews & provided quotes for all of the major news outlets. They've went on local/regional @NPR stations to do live interviews. They've provided their own follow up articles as well.

If so, then I stand corrected. But Division 51's Twitter posts seem like they're offering less nuance and more ideological hot takes.

@SPSMM_D51 primarily posts organizational content (lately that is quotes from the guidelines); content where it's members are quoted or have contributed; & other men's health & well-being articles & research.

Right, and the guidelines themselves--the source from which much of the other content flows--are thoroughly immersed in progressive ideology.

All research is grounded in a theory or model. It's definitely OK to disagree or prefer an alt. theoretical approach to men & masculinity research. But, I dont think that invalidates the gender role norm-based research.

The spirit behind the guidelines is to provide clinicians some ways in which to address the unique public health needs of men, and shed light on men's health disparities.

Seems like a better place to start in understanding 'men's health disparities' (e.g. dying younger) is to acknowledge that sexual selection can explain why males die younger in almost all mammal species....

I would prefer a socioecological approach to health disparities, as compared to bioloigical essentialism, to identify more contributing factors.

You're creating a false dichotomy between socioecological and biological influences. Testosterone--the long-term contributor to male mortality and morbidity--does not work in a vacuum. Biology organized and moderates socioecological influences.

How much of the variance can sexual selection explain in health disparities? The meta analyses reviewed for the guidelines suggested environmental factors explained more than bioloigical ones on the topics in the guidelines; but I didn't write the guidelines.
