I'm not a football fan (MMA is better, obvs), but this thread is a good defense of the sport as an American tradition and source of meaning for communities and young men. https://twitter.com/Scholars_Stage/status/1092471835160043520 …

I get that it's the official sport of the IDW because Rogan, but what's with all the MMA/football comparisons lately? (
@EricRWeinstein tweeted one last night.) It's like comparing apples that cause concussions and oranges that cause concussions.2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -
I think the comparison is important because it illustrates how many view concussions in terms of the visceral damage we see (blood, bruises, etc). MMA is a very safe sport with relatively low levels of CTE whereas football is one of the worst.

Replying to @aleksjames54 @YodelinZeke and
Helmets, padding, etc are believed to reduce CTE, although the opposite is true. Headgear was removed from olympic boxing precisely because of this.

That's a good answer, and I certainly understand the safety issues. Just seemed like a random comment to introduce a thread about how meaningful and important football is to millions of Americans.

It'll never not seem like an odd/random comparison to me. The solution to safety concerns in the NFL is for all of us to switch our allegiance to the UFC? I say this as a fan of both: they're completely different sports, cultures, leagues, and they both have major problems

TBH I only mentioned MMA because some folks might assume I'm anti-sports in general.

I honestly can't figure out why an evopsych dude would be a fan of MMA /s
