Psych Peeps: If I plan to use the data as part of my research, do I need IRB approval before posting a twitter poll? (And, yes, I appreciate the circularity of this question)

I said "yes" because YOU are designing a poll. However, if somebody else had designed it and laid it bare on twitter, you could use a "content analysis" design and consider the poll public content. Otherwise, when you submit for pub, you cannot say you had IRB approval for study.
So if an anonymous account with one follower tweets a poll, and I retweet it, can I analyze the resulting data as 'content analysis' of an already existing Twitter poll?

IMHO, if YOU created the anon account and launched poll, it would be unethical to say you did't and instead present it as content. To clarify: FINE IF you are doing this research for journalism or otherwise do not intend to pursue peer review for publishing as an empirical study
