You're not 'addicted to Twitter'. You're not 'addicted to the dopamine hits from Twitter', whatever that's supposed to mean. You're addicted to the quirky, maddening characters you follow on Twitter, & the culture wars they're fighting, & the hilarity that ensues.

Twitter structures the way those ‘characters’ are presented such that it shows the content most likely to push your buttons. It puts a score next to each post, explicitly gamifying discourse. It provides validation on demand, except when it doesn’t; an enticingly variable reward.

So, neural feedback loops aren't a real thing? I thought that was legit science. But, no?

I’m not sure the brain can differentiate between the chain of correlated behaviors (the system known as Twitter) and the moment of ‘hit’ - isnt that the premise of conditioning?

People who practice meditation can learn to differentiate or "break apart" the conditioning in this way, as they're experiencing it. It's pretty neat. But yes, to a mind that isn't trained in careful awareness (so, most people), it all tends to look like one thing.
