How much of this is that leftists don’t realize many on the right fully ground their ethical framework in religious doctrine?

Yes, but I'm not seeing religious scripture quotes from many pro-life folks. I'm seeing ethical arguments that even an atheist could make.
-
Aren’t these ethical arguments just empathy? Don’t need religion for that.
-
Empathy for what though? That’s the religious part I think

The idea that personhood begins at conception is usually a religious belief though. Or at least it’s a belief axiomatically accepted as true by religious people.
-
Nope, it is scientific (embryology) and grounded in ethics and anthropology as well.

Moral empathy is difficult - from
@AmandaAskell “When people disagree about moral issues, they often don’t treat the moral beliefs of those that they disagree with as genuine moral beliefs: instead they treat them like mere whims or mild preferences” http://www.rationalreflection.net/vegetarianism-abortion-and-moral-empathy/ … -
Each side of the abortion debate mischaracterizes the other side’s position: 1. “Pro-choice people just want consequence-free sex & the destruction of the traditional family.” 2. “Pro-life peope just want to control women’s lives by controlling their bodies.” Wrong and wrong.

What I’ve learned is that the far right has no clue about medical conditions in the third trimester that will kill the mother or medical conditions that are unsurvivable as a baby...and they do not care.
-
Not far right by any means. Please can you enlighten a fellow MD as to the third trimester medical conditions which we routinely recommend abortion for as opposed to early delivery (induction of labour) or Caesarean section?
-
Severe eclampsia. Anencephaly and other unsurvivable conditions of the newborn. None of these are especially rare or surprising if you had a decent medical education.
-
Most anencephaly babies are delivered by NVD or CS. Same goes for severe eclampsia. Not only did I have a decent medical education but I work at one of the largest obstetric hospitals in the world. Try again.
-
Then you are in favor of full resuscitation of anencephaly and not delivering with eclampsia? Not clear on your point here.
-
Again with the knowledge that third trimester “abortion” is merely induction and delivery or c section unless you are trying to be disingenuous.
-
Third trimester abortion is not induction or caesarean section. Abortion is abortion. Induction and resultant vaginal delivery or CS is an entirely different process. I’m not being disingenuous, you’re very clearly ignorant of what is involved.
-
You are aware that the far right is portraying what you describe as third trimester abortion?

It's one of the best examples of a "bubble". Most pro-choice activists are stupendously ignorant of their own position let alone mine "keep your religion out my uterus!" "Aristotelian personhood doesn't rely on religious doctrine!"
-
I once had a (very poor) date where she grilled me on my politics (Brooklynites smh)- finally landed on abortion. I articulated the personhood based condemnation of abortion, and it was pretty clear that she'd only ever encountered a twitter caricature of the pro-life position
-
Most humans couldn't articulate a position much less defend it with cogent argumentation. Kant was an intellectual demigod compared to the average man. Humans are generally afraid to think because their own reasoning might disagree with their premise.
