Honest question: don’t you think universities (traditionally) at least implicitly expect their professors to promote values like free speech/open discourse? Is this not requiring an ideological commitment?

Hmm. I think free speech as a value is definitely ideological
I see free speech as more of a practical necessity if the university is going to function well. It is the conduit through which ideologies are expressed.
